Overview

Not every legal issue fits neatly into one category.

Some legal matters are straightforward but still call for a lawyer: a document that needs to be commissioned or notarized, a guarantee that requires independent legal advice, or a letter that needs to be sent. Others are harder to categorize and touch on more than one area of law at once.

GP maintains a broad general practice and assists individuals and businesses with legal issues that may not fit neatly within a single practice area. We take the time to understand your objectives, explain the legal issues in plain language and provide practical options.

Whether you are trying to recover an amount you are owed, preparing to sign an important document, or simply want to understand where you stand, we can help you work toward an efficient resolution.

A broad perspective

A general practice that sees the whole picture.

GP maintains a broad general practice and assists clients with legal issues that may not fit neatly within a single practice area, including demand letters, negotiations, legal document preparation, independent legal advice, commissioning and notarization, and administrative matters.

Called to the Alberta Bar in 2024, GP has legal experience spanning over nine years and two jurisdictions, with a background in both legal practice and legal operations. He has also been involved in legal education and community service, and has volunteered with Lethbridge Legal Guidance.

Because his practice also includes real estate, estate planning, immigration, corporate and commercial, contracts, employment, family and civil litigation matters, GP can help identify issues that cross more than one area of law and explain how they fit together.

  • Plain-language explanations of your options
  • Practical next steps, not just problems
  • Help identifying issues across practice areas
  • A focus on efficient resolution

How it works

Five steps from first conversation to completion.

  3. Step 3: Confirm scope and fees

We confirm the scope of our services and the applicable legal fees before beginning work, so you know what to expect.

  4. Step 4: We get to work

We prepare or review your documents, commission or notarize where appropriate, communicate with other parties as needed, and keep you informed along the way.

  5. Step 5: Resolve and look ahead

We work toward an efficient resolution and let you know if any further steps or other legal services may be helpful.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Don't see your question? Call us at 403-892-3439 and we'll talk it through.

What is a demand letter?

A demand letter is a formal letter that sets out a claim or concern, explains what the sender is asking for and usually gives the recipient a deadline to respond. It is often used to try to resolve a matter, such as an unpaid amount, before more formal steps are considered.

A demand letter prepared by a lawyer can help present your position clearly. Some legal matters are subject to time limits, so it is a good idea to seek advice promptly.

Someone sent me a demand letter. What should I do?

Read it carefully, note any deadlines and avoid ignoring it. How you respond can affect how the matter unfolds.

We can review the letter, explain your options and help you prepare a response or negotiate a resolution.

Can you commission or notarize my documents?

Our commissioning and notarization services may include affidavits, statutory declarations, certified true copies and travel consent letters for minors.

Whether we can assist with a particular document depends on the document, its purpose and where it will be used. Contact us with details of your document and we can let you know.

What do I need to bring for commissioning or notarization?

Valid identification is required. You should also bring the document itself and any instructions you have received from the person or organization that requested it.

In many cases, you should wait to sign the document until you are in front of the person commissioning or notarizing it.

Will a notarized document be accepted outside Canada?

Requirements vary depending on the country and the organization receiving the document. Some documents intended for use outside Canada may need additional steps, such as authentication, after they are notarized.

We recommend confirming the requirements with the receiving organization before your document is signed.

Can you review a document before I sign it?

Yes. We can review a document, explain the key terms and potential risks in plain language and, where appropriate, suggest changes before you sign.
